  • 1. How does the novel Coronavirus spread?
  • The new coronavirus is a respiratory virus which spreads primarily through contact with the respiratory droplets of infected persons, generated when, for example, they cough or sneeze or blow their nose. It is therefore important that infected people practice respiratory hygiene measure. For example, sneeze or cough into a flexed elbow, or use a tissue and discard it immediately into a closed bin. It is also very important for people to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or a alcohol-based hand rub.
  • 2. What are the rules for disinfecting/washing hands?
  • Hand washing and disinfection are a key measure for preventing infection. You should wash your hands often and thoroughly with soap and water, for at least 60 seconds. If you do not have soap and water, you can use an alcohol-based hand rub instead (with at least 60% alcohol). 
  • 3. How long does the novel Coronavirus survive on surfaces?
  • Preliminary information suggests the virus may survive a few hours. However, this aspect is still under study. Simple disinfectants can kill the virus, making it no longer able to infect people, for example, disinfectants containing 75% alcohol (ethanol) or 1% chlorine (bleach).Always remember to disinfect frequently used items (your mobile phone, earphones or microphone) with a cloth dampened with alcohol or bleach-based products (following the manufacturer's instructions).
  • 4. Is it safe to receive packages from countries where COVID-19 has been reported
  • Yes. The WHO has stated that the likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus from a package that has been exposed to different conditions and temperature is also low.

  • There is no evidence that walking surfaces are involved in transmission of the virus. Moreover, spraying hypochlorite could increase the amount of harmful substances in the environment. Street cleaning with conventional soaps/detergents is still advised.

Objectives 

The problems: face masks that are currently not easily available, the production is slow, the distribution is inefficient and environmentally poor, the facial masks are uncomfortable and not specifically developed for long-term against a real danger, in billions pieces.

Preamble

The explosion of the pandemic produced damage, inconvenience, obstacles and above all highlighted some "limiting factors" of the structures and organizations that seemed perfectly suitable in the absence of an "invisible enemy". Healthcare facilities, transport and, above all, the distribution chains of basic necessities have shown great limits.

In reality, the pandemic is also a way, albeit a dramatic one, to implement all the hidden potential of our technologies and capabilities. From a certain point of view, the Pandemic is a kind of accelerator that can help us express the "hidden" potential, which can become useful not only in fighting the pandemic, but also in making the world better from many other points of view: the environment, the equitable, rapid and widespread distribution of goods and tools such as face masks, which in some situations can save many lives. At other times and in the future the availability of comfortable/efficient/safe/environmentally and economically friendly face masks will be able to guarantee greater freedom and they can improve the safety and the quality of life.

Pandemic is a drama, but it is a change. Like any change, it requires developing new ways of thinking, creating, producing, distributing.

Facial masks are one of the most important tools for pandemic control and will be an object that will become commonly used. Our project was born precisely from the idea that the facial masks, which constitute the most important PPE, must be conceived, designed, manufactured and distributed in a new, smart, fast, reliable, sustainable way: MyFaceMackApp is our answer to these objectives.

Problems

Facial masks have been the subject of many problems in recent months.

Availability Wherever the pandemic has exploded, a real emergency has arisen due to the availability of masks. The speed with which the need for facial masks grows has been far less than "traditional" distribution capacities, and in all the countries most severely affected there have been serious shortcomings in the availability of facial masks, especially in the early stages of diffusion of the virus, which are the most critical. There is no doubt that many of the deaths caused by the pandemic are attributable to the limited availability of means of protection.
Supply times. The "traditional" ways of supply have been inadequate, also because the explosion of the numbers of masks required has brought producers and supply chains to their knees.

One of the least discussed aspects in this first phase of the emergency is that of specificity. The facial masks adopted today, and the surgical masks and the highly sought after FFP2 are well known, in reality they respond to different needs, and have been adopted against the virus only for the lack of suitable tools. Surgical masks are created with the objective opposite to that for which they are used: they must prevent saliva droplets from the surgeon or paramedic from infecting the patient or an open wound.

The FFP2 / 3 instead were born to be used in dusty work environments, such as construction sites.

Although effective to contain the infection, the latter present major limitations and problems. They are not designed to be used for very long times, such as a long shift in the emergency room, or for a full day when we can return to a normal social life. Furthermore, they were not designed to defend against an "extreme" risk, such as that of the virus, but they serve to reduce the long-term exposure of dusts which can be dangerous only after long exposure. In the case of the virus, on the other hand, the face mask must be much more effective, and above all it must guarantee wearability and adhesion qualities on the face that are far superior to the common FFP2 / 3, because the minimum infiltration of air into a contaminated environment is sufficient. to ensure the infection of the person.

The solution

To face the pandemic and to guarantee a better life in the post-pandemic path for the whole population, it is necessary to have a face mask that is:

-comfortable in prolonged use and of a shape suitable for civil and hospital use
-guarantees a perfect fit on the face, without requiring excessive pressure which would damage the skin in the long term
-allows and facilitates communication, which is very important both in social life and in professional use
- both inexpensive and easily achievable
- can be quickly distributed with a capillary network
- be sustainable for the environment

The MyFaceMakApp project responds to all these objectives: it stems from the idea of ​​applying some available technologies, such as those hidden in our "smartphones", and making them available to a branched and widespread system.

With MyFaceMask App is the solution to the problem of the availability of personal protection devices for everyone, in fact thanks to this app anyone can print his mask, following our guidelines for the use of safe and biodegradable materials, with their own 3D printer certificated network so that you have a mask for you and your family that can last for all this complicated period that we are living. Moreover, we are working to create a network of contacts, through comparison and collaboration with other teams, so that we can improve the products/solutions and destroy together this invisible enemy.

Under the design of the masks, only small filters can be used an replaced, while the structure of the mask will be washed, sanitized and reused for a long time. The single use filters can be estimate to be 90% smaller than the current disposable masks.

Smartphones are increasingly using biometric facial data to digitally identify people. The measures are very accurate, because they must guarantee the identity of the person for sensitive operations.

The MyFaceMask app, thanks to the biometric sensors present in smartphones and increasingly popular, is programmed to detect biometric measurements of only the parts of the face concerned (contours of the mouth and nose). These measures are used to create a face mask with a 3D printer and will have a shape exactly corresponding to the facial features with which it will come into contact.

The data collected and collected by the system will be protected, even if they refer exclusively to very limited facial areas, totally insufficient to reproduce the person's "digital identity", even if such data were to be stolen or disseminated by mistake: they will only be useful to reproduce facial masks.

The realization of facial masks that will be a real "impression" of the face allows the use of less flexible and more durable materials, achievable with 3D printers but which will be perfectly washable and sanitizable, with great savings and with an environmental impact that we estimate 90% lower than disposable masks.

MyFaceMask is is an Application installable for free on all iOS and Android devices that have compatibility requirements and in a simple automated way and can create your own 3D mask and send it directly to the printer if is a member of us certificated network.

The scanning process is quick and easy: it happens only with the mobile phone camera. In addition, the material used in the production of the masks, biodegradable and hypoallergenic allows a repeated use, being able to sterilize the washing at high temperatures. The mask is therefore ergonomic and environmentally friendly, because you just need to change the filters.

The advantage is that, being custom-built, the signs released by normal masks after hours of use will be reduced. The mask that will be made is certified and it is possible to sterilize it both at high temperatures and expose it to the treatment of uv rays.


Expected impacts Contributing to create a safe, cost-effective product that respects nature, for us and future generations. Facilitating the recovery phase that is about to start across Europe , making personal protective equipment easily accessible, a mandatory element in places where the minimum distance cannot be guaranteed. The mask made with MyFaceMask has many customizations that will make it unique, choice of color and material, the ability to enter your name, a phrase or even a custom logo. The choice of transparent material will allow the total visibility of the face in order to be protected but recognizable and also allow people with auditory deficits to be able to read the lips.

The shape of the perfectly ergonomic mask not only makes it more comfortable, but also much safer, because an uncomfortable mask that poorly adapts to the face loses totally effectiveness. The visibility of the face allows to make the mask psychologically less impactful and to enhance the makeup and aesthetics, bringing everything back to a mode less distant from the way of presenting the past.


Measures to maximise impact

a) Dissemination and exploitation of results MyFaceMaskApp will be distributed for free on the Apple Store and Google store, so you can reach the largest number of end users in a simple and immediate way. Each user will have the opportunity to choose the model to be realized and if he has already been certified as a member of our network, he will immediately be able to use his custom mask in order to have an individual protection device for him and his family. To obtain the certification of 3d printer you will need to follow all the necessary guidelines so that you can only make masks that comply with all applicable regulations and certifications. Or alternatively you can rely on our network of 3d certified printers that will take care of the construction of the packaging and shipping.

In addition, our support service will be active 24 hours a day to solve any problems related to the realization of the 3D model.

The MyFaceMask App Team will use most of the funds in R&D So you can offer the user masks with certified, hypoallergenic and biodegradable material. End-user privacy is essential for us to safeguard it, all sensitive data collected will comply with current European Gdpr regulations, under no circumstances will personal information be disseminated. The app provides advanced encryption mode based on systems already widely tested in banking and all biometric data will remain only and exclusively within its device, the only 3D model of the generated mask will be exported, not the face mesh, so that it can be shipped to the certified printing network only if the user is a member certified by our experts.

b) Communication activities MyFaceMask App will be advertised and spread mainly on social networks so that you can reach any target of users. It is also possible to create groups on dedicated platforms in order to create their own community. We want to create a social network so we can help anyone to have their own certified and guaranteed personal protection device. In addition, the app will have the ability to receive push notifications in order to squeeze upto-date on news and events related to the MyFaceMask community

The necessities in order to continue the project

The MyFaceMaskApp project is in a very advanced state.

The App is already fully functional on very popular operating systems and we have verified its operation, which can be guaranteed by the most popular smartphones on the market. We have verified and tested the ability to create masks that exactly reproduce the person's facial impression.

In order to proceed with the project, we need support to implement some areas that would allow us to fully express the potential.

First of all, the specific software and innovative solutions that we have introduced in them must be intellectually protected.

Furthermore, the aspects relating to the recognition of efficacy and compliance with current regulations must be implemented, of which we are sure, but which must be recognized by accredited bodies with procedures that require a specific budget.

A further point that requires implementation is the protection of personal data, as can be the case of facial biometrics, which is individual and is now used very often as a form of "identity". Our software does not read the biometric fingerprint of the entire face, therefore the collected data would not be usable to identify the individual, but surely this aspect concerning the security of the collected data must be certified to ensure that the person will not have a copy of the full face biometric data in an external database.

Finally: to implement the spread of our network of producers and users, which will become a huge community, we will have to implement our organization with the addition of new employees.

The value 

The scenario that can already be hypothesized in the second phase of the pandemic is known and is as follows: until the development and diffusion of a vaccine, billions of people will have to live with the contagion containment tools. Among these, the mask is undoubtedly the most important. The creation of more effective, cheaper, less impacting on the environment and more available masks will have an impact that is difficult to calculate if projected and applied to a model of billions of people.

It is possible to estimate the value of our solution in these terms:

In the event that only half of the world's population will need a face mask for 1 year (when the vaccine is available in the most optimistic forecast), we can consider the need for approximately 3.5 billion disposable masks, which in the best of assumptions can be employed for a week. For a year, this number must therefore be multiplied by 52, assuming realistically a requirement of 150 billion masks that will be produced, transported and thrown into the environment. In addition, they will have an exorbitant cost, especially for the population.

In the case of a global realization (our App can be used all over the world, and the network of 3D printers can be global), we can estimate that the face mask can have a cost slightly higher than that of 2 or 3 masks single use. This means that global spending to protect the population will be around 25-30 times lower. The environmental impact will be at least 52 times lower, but in reality, as the masks made with MyFaceMasks will be recyclable, unlike many disposable masks, they can guarantee an even lower environmental impact.

The last added value, but not least, is the speed of diffusion. The Pandemic is not over: it has hit some countries hard, while in many areas of the planet it has not yet arrived. If it extends to continents not yet reached, and it does so quickly, MyFAceApp will be able to easily expand the network of 3D printers already present locally, since 3D printing is now widespread globally. In this case, inexpensive, washable and more protective masks can be made and available, produced respecting the environment directly in the center of the infection.

We therefore believe that our project can produce enormous value for all European countries and, in general, for the entire world population.
